GACN STATEMENT: SRDC MEETING A DISTRACTION AS LEADERSHIP FACES ASSET PROBE
[Georgetown, Guyana] – The Guyana Anti-Corruption Network (GACN) wishes to address the public regarding recent attempts to undermine the integrity of our ongoing investigative work, particularly in light of the ongoing Senior Regional Democratic Council (SRDC) general meeting.
We view the current SRDC gathering as a deliberate ruse designed to fool the public. While the agenda purports to address regional development, it appears the true intention is to provide a platform for Toshaos and government officials to control the narrative and ignore the gravity of our findings. Instead of confronting the evidence of financial discrepancies our team has uncovered, these leaders are using this meeting as a shield—a performative display of governance meant to distract from the serious questions being raised about their conduct.
Furthermore, we find it deeply concerning that this meeting is proceeding without meaningful acknowledgment of the foreign interests at play. There is a notable silence regarding the increasing Brazilian presence in our hinterland regions. While cross-border cooperation can be beneficial, the opacity surrounding Brazilian commercial activities and their interaction with local leadership raises significant red flags. We question whether this “business as usual” facade at the SRDC meeting is an attempt to prevent scrutiny of who is benefiting from these foreign engagements.
In light of these persistent attempts to shift the narrative, GACN is announcing an expansion of our investigative scope. We will be initiating comprehensive asset declarations and lifestyle audits regarding specific village leaders whom our preliminary inquiries suggest may have been compromised. For too long, resources intended for the development of our indigenous and rural communities have been vulnerable to misappropriation. We will be scrutinizing the acquisition of assets by these officials to determine whether their visible wealth corresponds with legitimate income, and whether any foreign entities have played a role in facilitating such discrepancies.
We call on these leaders to step away from the scripted talking points of the SRDC meeting and cooperate fully with our inquiries.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to the people of Guyana. We will not be deterred by narrative spin, and we will follow the evidence wherever it leads.
Ends.
